Why Do People Use Kratom?

Many individuals turn to kratom leaves as a holistic alternative to manage chronic pain, seeking relief from conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or back pain. Some kratom supporters believe it can treat other physical and mental health ailments including opiate and alcohol cravings; low sex drive; and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Research for kratom is still in its early stages and is by no means “safe” or approved for medical use.

Why do Americans use Kratom?

Americans use Kratom for a variety of reasons. Most use Kratom for ‘medicinal’ purposes, despite the fact that Kratom products have yet to be approved for safe use by the FDA. In larger doses, the plant can have analgesic, or pain-relieving, properties, since it interacts with the same receptors as prescription opioids. Some people find this advantageous in the treatment of chronic disorders like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and neuropathy. Other anecdotal findings claim that Kratom can increase libido and treat mental health disorders like PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

Another use of Kratom is in the treatment of substance abuse disorder. Since the plant’s psychoactive compounds act on opioid receptors, individuals in recovery have found that taking Kratom can relieve symptoms of withdrawal, reduce cravings, and even replace their former drug of choice.

Americans also use Kratom for more recreational purposes, like to enhance mood and boost energy levels. In smaller doses, the plant’s interactions with opioid receptors can produce sensations of euphoria and general well-being due to the release of endorphins. Additionally, certain strains of Kratom have been reported to increase energy levels due to mild stimulant properties, similar to the caffeine in coffee.

It’s important to note that there is very little research supporting Kratom’s use in the management of pain or substance abuse.

Kratom Side Effects

While some people have reported positive experiences with the drug, its use and effects can vary among individuals. Each person’s reaction is different, which is why it’s important to consider potential risks and side effects before using. Some of the negative side effects of kratom use may include:

  • Irritability

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Appetite loss

  • Dry mouth

  • Seizures

  • Liver damage

  • Psychosis

  • Constipation
